Public information

Your username, projects, project scopes, observed-species list, and claimed public source accounts can appear publicly and in search engines. You see this before creating an account.

Private learning data

Your answers, review history, schedule, due dates, personal confusions, Needs attention status, and detailed progress stay private.

Observation sources and locations

An iNaturalist import reads public observations with the same location precision shown by iNaturalist. A manual observed mark needs no date or place. Nature by Name does not publish private coordinates.

Voice answers

The microphone starts only after you choose Speak answer. Your browser handles speech recognition and may use its own speech service under its provider terms. Nature by Name receives the short transcript, not the recording, and does not keep an unmatched voice transcript as long-term learning data. You can always type or reveal the answer instead.

Authentication, operations, and analytics

Authentication providers process sign-in data under their own terms. Nature by Name stores the account information needed to run the service. Product analytics excludes raw audio, transcripts, answers, confusion pairs, and location history. Operational logs can retain limited security and error data.

Account deletion

Deleting your account hides your public profile immediately. You can recover it for 30 days. After that, your account, learning history, imports, and profile content are deleted. Records required for security, moderation, legal obligations, or a valid media grant can remain.

Search engines can keep cached copies for a while. Use Support for a privacy request.
